Popular Brick Paver Patterns for Patios

laying brick for patio

If you are considering installing a new patio there are so many options available today it can be hard to know where to start. Here we review the most popular brick paver patterns to create an impressive patio for years of enjoyment and increased home value.

Two-Tone Designs

You can bring your brick paver pattern to life by simply using two tons of brick in a traditional pattern. This provides texture and interest and can be matched to other hardscaping in your landscaping scheme.

Trendy Herringbone

Although this is a classic pattern in fashion, it is becoming all the rage in interior and exterior home design. This pattern lays bricks at 90-degree angles so what you end up with is a charming zig-zag effect. It is an easier pattern in that it doesn’t require special cuts in the bricks themselves to create the pattern.

Whimsical Pinwheels

This is a more complicated pattern that definitely needs some extra cutting. However, it is well worth the effort to add trending geometrics into your landscaping scheme. As the name implies, it is based on a pinwheel design that uses four bricks of like size and one smaller square brick in the center. You can use two brick tones to make it more noticeable, or a monotone palette for a more subtle effect.

Intricate Basketweave

Although the basketweave pattern has tons of impact, it is actually much easier to achieve than pinwheels. In this case, you create a grid using pairs of like-sized interlocking pavers that are altered in their direction. So looking down at the pattern you see two horizontal bricks, then two vertical bricks in each row.

Again, you can choose two tones or a single tone depending on how much texture and impact you wish to create. Either way, you’ll get the impression of a woven basket. You can also choose to run the pairs diagonally for an even more impressive look.

Graphic Grids

If you want to incorporate more shapes and materials, the grid offers the opportunity to get pretty creative. Basic in its design, it creates larger squares where a larger number of interlocking pavers are incorporated into a frame. The frame defines the clusters of brick paver squares and can be longer narrower brick pavers, cement, wood, or even plantings of a low-lying herb or moss. It takes square sections of nine brick pairs, or you could use nine single larger bricks. The possibilities are endless, but basically, your goal is to create a straight edge pattern defined by borders or frames.

Hectic but Artful Half-Basketweave

Getting up there on the complication scale, the half-basket combines pairs of brick pavers with singles. So instead of abutting your pairs, you space them out with a single brick paver, so you always have two horizontal bricks butted against a single vertical brick. In essence, you are alternating with two horizontal bricks and a vertical single or vice versa.

Jack-on-Jack All in a Row

This is a straight-up stacked brick paver design that creates equal rows with single bricks placed north, south, east, and west of each other. The effect is perfectly aligned pavers creating a sense of order. To make the most of this pattern you can use different tones to create a more pronounced pattern either alternating the tones or being more random to create a more organic feel.

Classic Running Bond

This pattern mimics the offset look of brick walls by staggering the position of each row. The brick pavers in each row are shifted by half the width of the bricks to create an appealing look so interlocking pavers are centered above and below each other.
